"Zum Letzten Pfennig" - the rubbadubdub that made history (with special greetings to "London No 1 CSC") In the name of our lord 1992: having fallen down with the owner of their pub, some St. Paulians started to look for a new place to stay on weekends. But all bars they called in couldn't meet the desires of this wild bunch of friends. Expensive beer, bad music and the lack of comfort seemed to make their quest to be a wild-goose chase. Desperately they ended up in a bar called "Nordlicht" but were not very happy about this choice...but beggars can't be choosers. Two of them, Marc and Klaus, were even facing a dreadful fate: being unemployed and no place to booze. Should fate be unkind to all of the others who felt in a same way? No, because on one afternoon with cake and coffee, Marc reported on the unbelievable thing he had seen:
Marc: "I have a seen that there's a pub to rent, next door to Millerntor..."
He was serious and the new legend was born on 4/12/1994. It goes without saying that the "First night of Zum Letzten Pfennig" went down in history. A dream came true! The new regular pub for St. Paulians (especially on match-days) was born and, on top of it all, their owners were two St. Paulians like us.
It's midnight: Manu shouts: "Saufen Aller!!!". This is just her way to order her drinks. Thomas tries to give a female guest a look. Ralf-Dieter starts to jiggle his feet to the music while Iris and Ines call for another music. Some seconds later, everyone is singing German Schlager songs. Ralf-D. has a chat with an unknown, dark-haired girl (Ralf-D. goes on jiggling...). "Hi, my name is Ralf-D....and what's your name?" Manu and Andrea keep a watch. Holger enters comes in and is escorted by Britta. Imme and Sven have an argument. 1.00 a.m.: Dirk and Vera have a discussion. Regnar talks about his bedtime stories. Raphael is angry: "I hate German Schlager!!!" Ralf-D. takes the offensive: "Have you got a boy-friend?" Hendrik also arrives and orders his first rotgut. Holger welcomes about 50% of all females. Imme and Sven still have an argument. 1.30 a.m.: Ralf-D. has made it! He kisses the unknown, dark-haired girl. Hendrik orders his third rotgut. Holger has welcomed all females and starts chatting. Imme and Sven finished their argument. 2.00 a.m.: Dirk and Vera enlarge their discussion. Olli removes his t-shirt. Meanwhile, the pub changes into a discotheque and even Raphael mutated to a singing copy of Fred Astaire (who hates German Schlager songs anyway???). Only Toschi stands in the midst of the dancing crowd without turning a hair. Manu and Andrea shout "Saufen Aller!!!". Thomas gazes into space. Ralf-D. complaints about the music with a smile, he just can't be angry about anything. Hendrik orders his 6th rotgut. Holger kisses Anke. 2.30 a.m.: Pagger dances on the bar stool while Olli holds his stool tenderly. Sven rejoices. Regnar starts burning because a pissed Manu inflammates the paper-bag on is head. Ralf-D. is alone again. Heiko and Thorsten conquered their favourite place at the corner of the bar where they can comment the bizarre happenings inside the "Letzter Pfennig". Hendrik orders his 8th rotgut. Holger kisses Britta. 3.00 a.m.: The song "Sunday Stripper" is played! Some male persons start to undress with swaying hips. Vera and Dirk interrupt their discussion. A few minutes later, Sven stands on a bar stool, his trousers and Y-fronts are wrapped around his toes, he just has his shoes and socks on. Imme cracks up. Thomas has a drinking problem, his cheeks are covered with bruises. Hendrik orders his 10th rotgut. Holger kisses Kirsten.
3.30 a.m.: Ralf-D. starts talking with the unknown, dark-haired girl again and contributes to the amusement in this way. Panda uses the bar as a piano. Diana looks desperately for her purse. Iris sings "Dear Klaus, take your clothes off!" Klaus doesn't hesitate to take his trousers down and shows Iris his bare bottom, saying: "Kiss my axxx!!!" Everyone is shocked, only Marc knows how to reply properly: "I don't give a fxxx!!!" 4.00 a.m.: Iris has a fit and causes a shock but, fortunately, she's not hurt. She gets a Coke - a taxi - and goodbye. Baked potatah. The unknown, dark-haired girl has left and the only thing Ralf-D. gets from her is a telephone number. Thomas leans on the wall and sleeps. Andrea does so too on the bar stool. Hendrik orders his 13th rotgut. Holger kisses Nicole. 4.30 a.m.: Desperately seeking Hendrik... 6.00 a.m.: Only the fittest survive the rest has already gone. Hendrik is found! He sits on the locked loo and sleeps. Andrea wakes up. Marc gets the message that the ladies-loo is blocked. Diana still looks for her purse.
6.30 a.m.: Marc solves the problem with the locked loo. 7.00 a.m.: Hendrik wakes up and staggers through the room. Panda sleeps at the bar. Marc switches off the music and starts to agree the takings of the pub from that night. 7.05 a.m.: A strange sound confuses the rest of the guests...it's Panda who slashes against the bar. Yuk!!!
Epilogue: But it's not the party all weekend that makes "Zum Letzten Pfennig" a very special pub at all. It is rather the mixture of people such as punks, redskins, mods and "ordinary people" calling in and making the visitors become sort of a family that meets in a kind of living room. Of course, we must also mention some negative incidents such as trouble with neighbours or Hooligans' raids (these raids, unfortunately, don't only happen once in a blue moon but quite often). Well, when it's all said and done there's only one thing to say: "Marc and Klaus, we love you!"
